At Jacobean Kitchens and Furniture Inc., we believe that every great kitchen starts with accurate measurements. Getting your space measured properly is the first step in creating a beautiful, functional design that fits your home perfectly.
We’ve helped homeowners across St. Thomas and surrounding areas bring their dream kitchens to life, and one thing we’ve learned over the years is how crucial precise measurements are — not just for design, but also for budgeting and planning.
Accurate dimensions help us (and you) in a few key ways:
- They allow us to prepare an accurate quote for your project.
- They help your countertop supplier estimate pricing and materials.
- They make sure your final kitchen layout fits your space perfectly.
If you’re planning a kitchen renovation or new build, here’s how to take the right measurements before we begin designing your custom cabinetry.
Step-by-Step: How to Measure Your Kitchen
What you’ll need:
A tape measure, a pencil, and a piece of paper (graph paper works best).
- Sketch the room
- Draw the general shape of your kitchen.
- Mark the locations of walls, doors, windows, and major obstacles.
- Measure the overall dimensions
- Measure each wall from corner to corner.
- Include doorways, trim, and window openings.
- Work around the room
- Start in one corner and measure to the first window, door, or opening.
- Write down each measurement clearly as you go.
- Measure ceiling height
- Measure from the floor to the ceiling in several spots (especially if your ceiling isn’t perfectly level).
- This is especially important if you’re considering floor-to-ceiling cabinetry.
- Note appliances and fixtures
- Record where your stove, fridge, and dishwasher are (or will be).
- Note any plumbing, electrical outlets, or vents that might affect cabinet placement.
- Include obstacles
- Beams, posts, bulkheads, or radiators — anything that sticks out or limits space should be marked on your sketch.
Why Accurate Measurements Matter
A good set of measurements ensures a smooth and efficient process from design to installation. It allows us to create a custom layout that suits your space perfectly and prevents surprises down the line.
If you’re not comfortable taking your own measurements — don’t worry! We offer professional measuring services to make sure everything is accurate before we begin building your cabinets.
